Arts Scholarship 

 

The Kodiak Arts Council offers arts scholarships each year to further individual growth in the arts. Scholarship funds may be used for a variety of artistic pursuits, including but not limited to: attending workshops or classes, purchasing materials or supplies to begin, advance, or complete work, supporting expenses related to artistic business development (marketing, online media, exhibition support materials).

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce 2019 awards to the support the following individuals and projects:

  • Deborah Bitanga will purchase supplies to work on a series of oil pastels illustrating Filipino immigrant experiences in Kodiak.

Youth Category

  • Grace Jackson receives the Ginny Shank Dance scholarship to pursue dance training at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp, Sitka, Alaska, in the summer of 2019.

  • Kiana Bravo will pursue dance training at the NUVO dance convention in Anchorage, Alaska, in September 2019. 

  • Adriana Catterson will pursue musical theatre dance training at Next Step Dance Kodiak.

  • Melody Kitka will pursue jazz or acrobatic dance training at Next Step Dance Kodiak.

  • Ila Abad, Janna Alonzo, Joyceline Garchitorena, Charlene Solano, Fatima Tolentino, Jallan Tuquib, and Gillian Wright will pursue dance training at the Thunderbird Dance Camp.

In 2017, the Kodiak Arts Council was pleased to make a financial investment in the artistic development of the following individuals and projects:

  • Breanna Peterson will attend a photography workshop associated with the Alaska juried photography show Rarefied Light, and submit work for the show.

  • Jared Griffin will write an original stage adaptation of for young adults of Gene Stratton-Porter's 1904 novel Freckles.

Youth Category:

  •  Eunice Fangonilo received the Ginny Shank Dance scholarship to pursue ballet training at Next Step Dance Studio for the 2017 - 2018 year.

  • Ariel Magnuson, Veronica Johnson, and Annie Vandyke will pursue dance training at the Thunderbird Dance Camp.

2016 Awards:

  • Anjuli Grantham will pursue research, writing, and publication on Alaska fishing communities and culture through her Ferry Tales project

  • Cunat Spencer will create a collection of tactile (intended to be touched for interpretation) white-on-white paintings of Kodiak landscapes.

  • Sarah Nugent will pursue professional development in Dance Education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Youth Category:
 

  • Victoria Beaver, Colton Morrison, and Chella Rae Nugent will pursue arts training at Sitka Fine Arts Camp.

  • Cierra Johnson will pursue dance training at the Anchorage Classical Ballet Academy.

  • Adalyn Ellsworth will pursue dance training at the UNC School of the Arts, Summer Dance Program.

  • Kim Rescutodio, Troy Valdez, & Marcus Viscocho will pursue dance training at Thunderbird Dance Camp.
