This camp will bring a sense of mindfulness to campers’ day through play and exploration for skills that are relevant for school and home! Campers will participate in a broad range of fun activities such as yoga, exploration of healthy foods (making your own snacks), sensory discovery, obstacle courses, scavenger hunts while immersed in their natural environment. Nail Your Next Audition!

Fight your stage fright! This camp offers practical tools for preparing yourself for theater auditions. Abigail Duston teaches students to control their voice, stage presence, and physical expressions.  Students will learn techniques that can be applied to “cold reads” at auditions, as well as classroom and public speaking opportunities!

Drawing: Comics & Cartoon Strips

Delve deep into the creative process as you learn to envision, design, and draw a multi-page adventure story!  Artist Ric Chamberlin will teach students to design original cartoon or comic characters and render a series of panels to illustrate the story using artistic storytelling techniques such as composition, perspectives, shot establishment, word balloon and caption placement.  Best for students who love to draw and are ready to be challenged!

Blooming with Block Printing

Explore linoleum block printing through the study of stories!  Artist Jennifer Foster and teacher Lauren McCausland will teach the class to use various carving, coloring, and printing techniques to create prints inspired by words and nature.

Cardmaking

There are few things better than a homemade card, and this one-day class will send students home with a whole collection of them! Artist Brianna Gibbs will teach students to layer papers in creative ways, hand-letter, stamp and

ultimately produce up to 6 homemade cards. All the materials are provided, including examples and guided instruction for specific designs!

Zentangle for Beginners

Explore the art of Zentangle through detailed pattern making in pen and ink. Using repetitive lines and simple shapes anything can be turned into a masterpiece with a little patience and time for noticing the details. Day one and two, artist Jennifer Foster focuses on black and white and day three will expand to colored tangles.

Intro to Jazz Dance

A beginning class in the basics of Jazz Dance.  First time or second  year dancers who would like to sharpen their understanding of the terminology and movements.  This class will focus on beginning level jazz: counting music, feeling the beat, tempo and basic jazz steps. Dancer Ariane Clark will teach class a simple combination piece to be shown to families on the last day of class! Dancers will also receive a t shirt.

Intermediate Jazz Dance

An intermediate class for third year dancers and up!  We will review the basics, learn proper stretching techniques,  and move into more complex jazz movements, jumps, and turns.  We will focus on the technique behind multiple turns and the art of using the floor to bring height to leaps and jumps. Dancer Ariane Clark will teach class a few combination pieces and a short routine to be shown to families during the last class! Dancers will also receive a class t-shirt.

Wild Toolmaking

Learn to make art with things you find in nature! Artist Jacqueline Madsen will take students on field trips, gathering natural materials to make drawing sticks, pens, paint brushes, charcoal, inks, crayons and paints! Students will use the tools and supplies they make to create artwork, and will bring home their handmade materials!

Storytime Crafts

Classic children's literature will serve as the inspiration for daily projects in this week-long exploration of reading and crafts. Each day will start with the reading of a pre-selected book and lead into a craft activity related to the story. Students will work with artist Brianna Gibbs as they learn to use a variety of artistic mediums, and will go home each day with a finished piece of art to share with family and friends!

Beginning Guitar

Rick Chamberlin has played guitar professionally for over forty years, and has taught beginning and advanced guitar on Kodiak Island for nearly twenty years. His method of teaching beginners is to first learn a few basic chords and then  immediately begin playing songs. He finds that students new to the guitar want to jump right into playing songs, and that will be the focus of these beginning lessons!

Intro to Machine Sewing

Teacher and quilter Kate Anthony guides students as they learn the basics of using a sewing machine. Students will learn how to: thread a needle, rethread a machine, replace a bobbin, sew straight lines, iron, cut with a rotary cutter, and assemble quilt squares. Learn the basics before moving on to create quilt blocks. Bring your own machine or use a machine provided. All material will be provided.

Intro to Jazz, Swing, and Rockabilly Guitar

This course is an introduction to the chords and scales typically used in Jazz and Torch music. The Melodic Mode opens up an entirely different range of tonal possibilities and categories in music. This course is for guitar players who know their way around Rock and Blues guitar, but may have hit a ceiling.  It will open up a new way of seeing the guitar neck and improve their playing significantly. Musician Ric Chamberlin makes this method easy to play and use.  Bring your guitar and let's make amazing music!

Crazy Quilts

Come create a unique quilt square! Students will learn how to cut and sew a crazy quilt square using irregular shaped fabric. Students will then turn their crazy quilt squares into pillows, as time allows. Students must have some basic machine sewing skills. All materials provided, led by artist and teacher Kate Anthony.

Science of Sound

"What exactly is sound and how is it generated?” “Why does a trumpet and a flute sound so different?” Join musician Ric Chamberlin and teacher Sarah Powers for a five day workshop to discover the answers. Students will participate in constructing their own sound generating devices, play a variety of percussion instruments, and for a big finale join in a big jam session with various student musicians from Kodiak Junior High and High school.

Paper Puppetry

Don't miss this chance to join artist Jacqueline Madsen and teacher Antoinette White Gross for a magnificent puppet theatre! Students will create paper puppets based on characters from fairy tales and myths.  They will use heavy cardstock to create jointed puppets that can be colored or painted... and then the class will stage a performance for the public at the library on the final day of class!

Cyanotype Sunprinting

Explore the art of cyanotype sun printing while learning about local flowers and plants. Students will spend the week exploring Kodiak flora, and make pressed plant sun prints on fabric that will then be hand stitched into take-home decorative pillows.
