Munartet Workshops

Kodiak Arts Council offers two workshops a year to promote the development of arts-enhanced and arts-integrated classrooms in Kodiak. Led by experienced teaching artists, the workshops are designed to provide support in a particular arts focus and help educators make connections between the artistic practice and an additional curriculum area

Space in Munartet Arts Workshops are limited and members of the Munartet Project cohort receive priority.

Saturday September 21 | 1:00pm-4:00pm

Learning from a Master’s Study (Or the fine art of copying other people’s art to learn from them!) with Bonnie Dillard

This workshop will provide the opportunity to first look at and discuss two very different artists: the terribly famous Vincent van Gogh and the hilarious contemporary artist and writer Maira Kalman - and then to copy their work. Bonnie Dillard will guide participants in trying out the techniques and materials used by each artist to illustrate the satisfying and helpful exercise of creating a “Masters Study”.

Any skill level will benefit.

All levels are welcome and supplies will be provided.

Saturday February 22 | 1:00pm-4:00pm
Into the Briny Deep: Line Drawing with Natasha Zahn

*NEW!* Along with practicing creative mark making and watercolor painting, we will make paper and paint assemblages to fill our own “touch tank” in the Auditorium display case. Be ready to volunteer some of your fantastic fish, and be open to making double sided cut-outs. Imagine mobiles of fish depicting the Briny Deep!

Swim among the fish and connect art and literacy through line drawing and mark making. We will work through a new series of guides for various fish species, break down what we see, use descriptive vocabulary to describe the steps, and come up with perfectly imperfect fish art projects to incorporate into your classrooms. Expand from simple exercises to more complex, add color to black and white line drawings, and create collages or 3-D assemblages. Experiment with a variety of art supplies, and add to your repertoire of line drawing lessons.

Walk away with a notebook of reproducibles, instructional material, and a resource list. Natasha connects the material to several ELA standards, but you can fit these exercises to meet other standards appropriate for your class. We will follow an agenda of instructional time, hands on time (Fun! Conversation! Snacks!), and production time, including display case installation.

Class size is limited. Adults only- all levels are welcome and supplies are provided. Munartet Learning Community members use the promo code MUNARTET to register for free.
